Swedish Lapland

As a fly fishing guide in the Trentino region of Italy, I have been fortunate enough to experience some of the best fishing in Europe. However, before I became a guide, I spent five summers in the Swedish Lapland as a fisherman, targeting large Brown trout, Grayling, and pike. The experience taught me a lot about fishing and helped me to become the guide I am today.

The first thing I learned was the importance of location. The Lapland is a vast wilderness, with thousands of lakes and rivers to explore. Finding the right spot to fish was often a matter of trial and error. I spent many hours hiking through the forest, wading through streams, and exploring new lakes. The thrill of discovering a new fishing spot and catching a trophy fish was unlike anything else.

Another valuable lesson I learned was the importance of adapting my approach. In the Lapland, the fish are often larger and more wary than in other parts of Europe. I had to adjust my fishing techniques accordingly. I learned to use larger flies and heavier tippet, to cast farther and more accurately, and to pay more attention to the details of my presentation. It was a challenge, but it made me a better fisherman.

Finally, the experience taught me to appreciate the beauty and solitude of the wilderness. In the Lapland, there were many days when I didn't see another person for hours on end. I was able to immerse myself in nature and connect with something deeper than myself. It was a humbling and awe-inspiring experience.

Overall, my time in the Lapland was an unforgettable adventure that shaped me as a fisherman and a person. It taught me the value of persistence, adaptability, and appreciation for the natural world. And while I am now a guide in the Trentino region of Italy, the lessons I learned in the Lapland continue to guide me every day on the river.
